Hardware Requirements

The S1 system provides a software-only solution using off-the-shelf hardware components. This section lists the minimum required hardware.

Hardware category Requirements
Node Server
  • A 64-bit x86 server.
Storage
  • S1 HA deployments: Connect two S1 nodes to a shared dual port disk enclosure (JBOD) or use a cluster-in-a-box solution such as a Storage Bridge Bay (SSB) system.
  • At least one boot device such as a RAID-protected disk with a minimum of 128 GB of space. This storage space is used for the S1 operating system installation.
CPU
  • A minimum of 8 cores. Preferably a dual Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2620v2 or higher.
RAM
  • A minimum of 64GB RAM. For larger systems, 256GB or 512GB is preferred.
Network Interfaces
  • Management: 1 Gbps Ethernet NIC.
  • Data connection: 10/40/100 Gbps Ethernet NIC.
  • Interconnect: For high availability (HA) deployments, an additional 10/25/40/100 Gbps interface is required for HA heartbeats and traffic.

High availability (HA) interconnect considerations

In standard high availability (HA) deployments with shared storage, block storage volumes are distributed across both nodes. The interconnect, which uses RDMA, is not just for heartbeats, but also for data transfer.

If only the network connection fails on one node, volumes do not move to the other node. Instead, the volumes are accessed through the interconnect. For this reason, the interconnect should be at least double the speed of the data interface. For example, if the data interface is 8G fibre channel (FC) or 10G Ethernet, the interconnect should be at least 25 Gbps. For higher speeds or multiple data interfaces, the interconnect should be higher, such as 40 Gbps or 100 Gbps.
