Managing initiator hosts

For block-based virtual storage containers (VSCs, also referred to as volumes), you must define initiator hosts that connect to the system, and map hosts to volumes. This is often referred to as LUN mapping or LUN masking.

Hosts

To create and manage the mapping of a logical volume and to configure hosts, select Hosts .

List hosts

To display a list table of hosts, select List from the top menu.

• Name: To filter the table by the name of a host.
• Mapping: To view the logical volume mapped to each host in the list.
• IP: To view the IP assigned to each of the host in the list.
• WWN: View the World Wide Node (WWN) Fibre Channel (FCC) of the host.
• IQN: View the iSCSI Qualified Name (IQN) of the host.
• NQN: View the Network Qualified Name (NQN).
• Submit: To apply settings.

The table of hosts also supports on-the-fly filtering operations.

Creating a host

To create a host, select Create from the top menu.

• Name: Enter a name of your choice for the new host. If you are creating the same initiator on multiple systems for replication, use the same name on both systems to make it easier to pair the initiators.
• IP (optional): Enter the initiator IP address or DNS hostname. This field is not used for mapping or access. You can specify the IP address or hostname to make it easier to identify initiator hosts in the StorONE user interfaces.
• Enter an identifier for the new host using one of the following fields:
  • WWN: Enter World Wide Node (WWN) identifier for Fibre Channel (FCC) interface.
  • IQN: Enter iSCSI Qualified Name (IQN) for iSCSI interface.
  • NQN: Network Qualified Name (NQN) for Nonvolatile Memory Express (NVMe) interface.
• Submit: To create the host using the settings.

Pairing a host

Block replication supports SPC3 persistent reservations where the locks are replicated between the nodes in a replicated system. To activate these persistent reservations, you must create an initiator host on both systems, and pair them together. This allows an initiator host that has a persistent reservation to continue writing to the volume after a replication transition event.

If you do not define a host on both systems in a replicated system and pair them together, that host is blocked from writing to the volume after a replication transition occurs and the secondary system becomes the primary.

• Name: To select an existing host name. Alternatively, select the Add Name icon to create a new host.
• Target System: Select the name of the target S1 system.
• Target Host: Select the name of the same initiator on the target system. If it does not exist, you must first access the target system and create a host. To make it easier to match hosts, use the same name for the initiator on both StorONE systems.
• Submit: To create the pair using the settings.

Editing a host

To edit a host select, Edit from the top menu.

• Name: To select a host for editing.
• Newname: To rename the host.
• IP: To edit the hostname/IP of the host.
• WWNS: To edit the WWNS identifier.
• IQN: To edit the IQN identifier.
• NQN: to edit the NQN identifier.
• Submit: To apply settings.

Deleting a host

To delete a host, select Delete from the top menu. Use the Name field to select the name of the host and Submit to delete it.

Unpairing a host

To unpair an initiator host in a replicated S1 system, select Unpair from the top menu.

• Name: To select the host name.
• Target System: To select the target system that you want to unpair with.
• Submit: To unpair the host from the target system.

Mappings

The S1 storage system offers a practical solution for efficiently mapping logical volumes to block-level storage. Using host identifiers, administrators can establish connections between hosts and storage arrays. This allows for streamlined access to logical volumes, which improves storage management and resource utilization. To map a logical volume through host, select Mappings .

List mappings

To display a table list of mappings, select List from the top menu.

• Application: To filter the table by an application instance name.
• Host: To filter the table by a host name.
• Submit: To apply settings.

The table of mappings also supports on-the-fly filtering operations.

Creating and Edit a mapping

To edit or create mappings, select Edit from the top menu.

• Application: To select an application instance name.
• Host: To select a host name.
• Volume: To select existing volume from the application instance. Alternatively, you can use the Add Volume icon to create new volume in the application instance.
• Add more: To map more logical volumes to the host.
• Submit: To edit/create the mapping using the settings.
