High availability

On a high-availability (HA) pair, both nodes are normally active, each owning a share of the system's volumes. These commands change that ownership — moving every volume onto one node (takeover), restoring the normal split afterward (giveback) — and let you redirect your own session to a specific node. All three require an HA system, and takeover/giveback also require the Admin role.

Takeover

nodes takeover forces one node to take ownership of every volume in the system, including the ones normally owned by its peer — the target node's HA state becomes "All" and the peer's becomes "None". This is typically done ahead of planned maintenance on the peer node, so it can be taken offline without interrupting I/O.

Using the web interface

  1. Open Inventory > Nodes, select Takeover.
  2. Under Node Selection, choose the node that will take over all volumes.
  3. Confirm. You'll be returned to the node list once the takeover completes.

Using the CLI

nodes takeover --node=<name> [--force]
Option Description
--node=<name> The node that will take over all volumes from its peer (its HA state becomes 'All', while the peer's becomes 'None').
--force Skip the confirmation prompt.

Example

Take over all volumes onto s1-node-01 ahead of maintenance on its peer:

nodes takeover --node s1-node-01

Giveback

nodes giveback reverses a takeover, restoring the normal split of volume ownership between the two nodes of the pair. It doesn't take a node name — it always operates on the pair as a whole.

Using the web interface

  1. Open Inventory > Nodes, select Giveback.
  2. Confirm.

Using the CLI

nodes giveback [--force]
Option Description
--force Skip the confirmation prompt.

Example

nodes giveback

Switching your session's node connection

nodes connect redirects your current CLI or GUI session to communicate directly with a different node in the pair. This only applies when you're connected directly to the nodes (rather than through StorONE's cloud/portal relay) — it's a niche option you'll mainly use for node-specific troubleshooting rather than everyday administration.

Using the web interface

  1. Open Inventory > Nodes, select Connect.
  2. Under Node Selection, choose the node to connect to.
  3. Confirm.

Using the CLI

nodes connect --node=<name>
Option Description
--node=<name> The node to connect to.

Example

Switch the current session to talk directly to s1-node-02:

nodes connect --node s1-node-02
