Software Updates
Software Updates
StorONE supports non-disruptive updates (NDU) —— installing a new software version on a node without taking your storage offline. The customer-facing update flow has two steps: upload the update package to the node you want to update, then install it.
Each node is updated independently, and you can only have one uploaded package waiting on a node at a time —— uploading a new one replaces whatever was there before.
Uploading a software update
Uploading copies the update package to a node and validates it, but doesn't install anything yet —— you still need to run installation separately once the upload finishes validating.
Using the web interface
- Open Administration > Software Updates.
- Under Software Update Upload, choose the update package file and upload it.
- Track validation progress in the uploaded update list (see below).
Using the CLI
software_updates uploads upload --fileToUpload=<versionUpload>
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
--fileToUpload=<versionUpload> |
The local path to the software update package to upload. |
Example
software_updates uploads upload --fileToUpload "C:\Updates\storone-4.0.1.pkg"
Listing uploaded updates
Shows the package uploaded to each node and its validation status (validating, extracting, success, or failed), so you know when it's ready to install.
Using the web interface
Open Administration > Software Updates. The upload status is shown alongside the upload control.
Using the CLI
software_updates uploads list [--node=<name>]
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
--node=<name> |
Filter by node name. |
Examples
List the uploaded update status on every node:
software_updates uploads list
Check the status on just one node:
software_updates uploads list --node node1
Deleting an uploaded update
Removes the update package that was uploaded to a node, without installing it. Useful if you uploaded the wrong package or no longer need it.
Using the web interface
- Open Administration > Software Updates.
- Under Node Selection, pick the node and click Delete on its uploaded update.
Using the CLI
software_updates uploads delete --node=<name>
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
--node=<name> |
The node to delete the uploaded version from. |
Example
software_updates uploads delete --node node1
Installing a software update
Before you install, StorONE checks that the node can safely go down for the update:
- On a high-availability system, the node being updated must not currently be serving any volumes
—— fail them over to its HA partner first. - On a single-node system, the node can't have any primary (actively serving) volumes at all; if it has volumes that aren't replicated anywhere else, you'll be warned that installing will cause downtime for them.
- You can't install a version that's already running on the node, and you can't downgrade to an older version.
Installing disconnects any session (GUI or CLI) that's connected directly to the node being updated —— log back in once the installation finishes.
Using the web interface
- Open Administration > Software Updates.
- Under Node Selection, pick the node, and under Version Selection, pick the uploaded version to install.
- Confirm to start the installation. You'll be disconnected if you were connected to that node directly.
Using the CLI
software_updates installation install --node=<name> --version=<name> [--force]
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
--node=<name> |
The node to install the version on. |
--version=<name> |
The version to install. |
--force |
Skip the confirmation prompt. |
Examples
Install the uploaded update on node1, confirming the prompt:
software_updates installation install --node node1 --version 4.0.1
Install without a confirmation prompt —— useful in scripts:
software_updates installation install --node node1 --version 4.0.1 --force
